MSF Sugar is committed to delivering high standards of environmental performance in the management of its operations.
Plantations: MSF Sugar farms comply with Queensland Government Reef Protection legislation. Farming operations strive to meet and exceed the industry benchmarks for cane production set down in the SmartCane BMP industry quality program.
Land and water management plans have been developed in conjunction with the Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Water and these are being implemented on the company's plantations and leased farms.
Manufacturing: For each of its milling sites, MSF Sugar holds current integrated authorities under the Environmental Protection Act 1994 authorising the following environmentally relevant activities:
- fuel burning, and
- sugar milling or refining.
The conditions of the authorities require that, in carrying out the environmentally relevant activities, MSF Sugar must take all reasonable and practical measures to prevent and/or minimise the likelihood of environmental harm being caused.
In compliance with the conditions of the authorities MSF Sugar has implemented Integrated Environmental Management Systems which provide for the effective and appropriate management of the actual and potential impacts resulting from the carrying out of the environmentally relevant activities. Appropriate staff are trained in aspects of the authorities and meet regularly to ensure compliance.
